Birth Story, anyone? Hello all! (*wipes milk off fingers*) Ok, finally I have some ME time now. Seriously, my life seems to revolve around this tiny being we named Iman Adeena. But it doesn't matter. Cos I am so in love with her that I don't know if I can love anybody else as much as her (apart from the hubby of course). Ok, so since my Notice of Eviction entry, I have safely given birth on the 9th of June which was three Saturdays ago. Thank you all for your well wishes and prayers. The event which I had waited for so anxiously and with much anticipation, clueless on what its going to be like, has gone by in a blink of an eye. And now when I watch Birth Day, A Baby Story and House of Babies, which I watched so diligently on Ch 70, scaring myself silly, I can say "Been there, done that!!" Haha.. Ok, so I'm about to blog it down to share as well as to refresh my memory, lest I forget. So this entry is going to be so long-winded and it might get boring. Reading it is at your own discretion. If I have students or ex-students reading this, I suggest y’all switch off yr PC and go hit your books now cos the school hols are over! So the truth is, she did get 'evicted' (i.e. induced). Reason; the 'premise' had a 'plumbing' problem. But actually, during my visit to my gynae on Monday the 4th of June, she said I could choose to be induced anytime since the baby is big enough and that if I waited longer, the baby will get bigger. And that also means I could choose my baby's birth day. 06/06/07 or 07/06/07 would be a nice date don't you think? Anyway, she was due on the 11th so by the 12th she would have been overdue and will inevitably need to be induced bcos of her size. Too big and it will be difficult to come out (duh!). I decided to wait because inducing sounds so unnatural. And from what I’ve heard, and my gynae also said, the contractions will be even more intense. Plus, I’ve already started to lose my mucous plug since 2 weeks before that, so I was sure baby will want to come out on her own soon. Then, on Friday (8th), I got up from bed in the morning and felt like I had peed in my pants. I checked, its clear and smell-less so its definitely not urine. Hmm.. Did my water break? I was half expecting it to gush out like water from the tap. But that didn’t happen. And there was no pain. And so I went about as per normal that day. Heck I even went exhibition-hopping at the Singapore Expo that afternoon with Mum. From Motherhood Expo, to the Kampong thingy, to the John Little Sale.. carrying bags of last minute shopping (I somehow knew that would be the last time I will shop in a long time to come having to be ‘confined’ to the home for more than a month). In the midst of that shopping, I still had that ‘peeing in my pants’ feeling and so I decided to give my gynae a call just to check. And so she told me that my water was already leaking (duh!) and told me to check-in at the hospital that night if I feel any pain, or I just come the next morning at 7.30 a.m. to be induced. Oh oh… this is it……… Naturally, I couldn’t sleep that night. I hate not knowing what to expect. So I asked a girlfriend of mine, who just had a baby too and she was induced as well, what the procedure was like, just to prep myself. But its as if I’ve forgotten that every pregnancy and every birth experience is different for different people. And I found that out the next day. So that morning, I checked-in at East Shore at around 7.45 am and was already put on the drip to induce my labour by 8.15. My friend said she had to wait 5 hrs before anything happened to her and so I also expected the same. However, less than half and hour later, I felt that ‘menstrual cramps’ feeling she was telling me about. Ok not so bad, I can take that, although it was getting a little more painful every few minutes. By 9 am, I was breaking out into a cold sweat. At the same time I was worried about passing motion while giving birth as I’ve heard that has happened before. So I asked if I can go to the toilet cos I didn’t go that morning. I was given a potty instead. I can’t imagine doing it in the potty, and I got kinda frustrated with the nurse who told me to co-operate when I demanded to go to the toilet. She said that my contractions were already about 2 – 3 minutes apart lasting for 30 secs and that it was impossible for me to stand up to go to the toilet, what with the drip and all. Really? 2-3 minutes apart?? I didn’t realized it was that quick! By 10 am, I was talking less. The pain had gotten a little more intense but still manageable. It wasn’t so much pain at the tummy itself or down there. It was a back breaking kind of pain. I was perspiring profusely and blamed it on the thick blanket. By 11 am, I was practically bathing in my sweat in a 16 degrees aircon room, curled up like a prawn. I told the nurse my intention to have that epidural and she said she will call the anesthetist to come in. At 11.30, the anesthetist still had not attended to me yet. By now I was hanging on to hubby with one hand and slapping my forehead with the other. That kinda freaked him out a bit. I demanded he go out to ask where that darn anesthetist was. He finally came at 12.15. Its about time Mister! I didn’t care that he was going to poke my spine. I knew it was going to be such a relief after that. And really, the pain went away like a miracle, I stopped perspiring immediately and managed to smile after that. I even remarked to my hubby, in front of the anesthetist and a nurse, “Wah dear, bagus ah benda epidural ni!” Much to their amusement. After that, it wasn’t just me who managed to get some rest, even the hubby got some shut eye on the cosy armchair they had in the delivery room. The Doppler monitor showed that my contractions were at a regular 3 minutes interval. It was weird that I couldn’t feel anything. The nurse kept telling me to sleep, but I couldn’t. I could not eat, so they kept stuffing me with Milo. I only knew later that I had taken a pissed on the bed, from all that Milo, without me knowing. Gross, right? :P At 3pm, I was about 6 cm dilated. My gynae, she’s one superwoman and that’s a whole other entry altogether at another time, said she’ll come in at 6pm to check me again and hopefully by then I’ll be fully dilated. So from then on there really was nothing much to do except lie there and watch tv. Parents and relatives who called hubby to ask about me was surprised that I was just relaxing and watching tv. “Is she in labour already or not??” Haha… Ok anyway, my gynae came in a little earlier, at 5.40pm instead of 6 to check my cervix. She took one look and said, “Ah… can see the head already. Come, lets deliver now.” Hubby and I spontaneously turned to each other with mouths open. What?? Like now, now? But anyway, it was really about time too cos my epidural was finishing. This baby knows not to waste her parents’ money cos another dose of that would set us back by about $200+. We were given quick instructions on what to do. I was told to push as hard as I can, as if trying to pass a hard stool, with chin to my chest. Hubby was to support my head while I do that. Ok so we tried once at the sign of a contraction from the Doppler moniter. Remember I was still on the epidural so I really didn’t feel a thing! So it was kinda hard trying to push when you can’t feel what you’re pushing you know. So no choice just push only lah! My gynae was so funny. After that one try, she told us to wait for the next contraction before we try again and while waiting, and having two of her fingers stuck to my down there, she can turn her head and watch tv lah! I don’t want to be the only one not able to see my baby’s head first. So I asked if I could see it from a mirror. I saw that being done in the documentaries that I watched. They gave me a puzzled look but submitted to my request. The midwife literally ran out and got me a big mirror! If only somebody could hold on to that mirror the whole time, I could have watched the whole ‘show’ :P But nobody could :( Hubby did see the whole ‘show’ though from where he was standing while supporting my head. From start to end. He saw me being snipped 3 times and I tore quite a lot, for which I really had no knowledge of cause I was busy pushing and didn’t feel a thing! I only knew later when my gynae was stitching me up. Hubby said it was the bloodiest show he has ever seen. So for those who think that I cheated by taking pain relief, imagine what its like once the epidural wears out. I felt like crying each time I had to go to the toilet. Altogether, I did about 5 rounds of pushing in about 20 minutes, which was actually fairly quick. The whole time, two people made me more frustrated than I already was. One of them was one of the midwives. However nice I thot she was at first, became the most horrid woman at the moments when I was pushing. Her task was to help out with the birth of baby by pressing and literally pushing down my tummy with all her might. At one point I literally exclaimed out loud to her, “Owww!! Pain lah!” For which I regretted after that because she was actually helping me. Heh. The other person I was really angry with was hubby. He was doing such a good job supporting my head that he forgot that I needed to put my head back when taking another deep breath. I have short breaths you see, and so I couldn’t keep my breath for 10 secs at a time therefore needed quick deep breaths in between pushing. Now how to take a deep breath when your head is being pushed right up to your chest, you tell me??! I literally shouted at him, “I can’t breathe!!” Haha.. poor hubby. I was such a terrible person in labour. I safely gave birth to Baby Iman at 6.03p.m. Amazingly, I felt the sensation of baby’s head between my legs and eventually when her whole body came out, it felt like something ‘terburai keluar’ (sorry, don’t know how to say that in English). My gynae cleared her airways and put her on me, cord still intact. It was the best feeling in the world I tell you. Picture perfect. But no picture taken lah. Baby felt so warm and she was clean! i.e. not covered with much vernix. Those fresh coconuts worked I guess. And she has a lot of hair! No wonder I was peeing every few hours whilst pregnant with her. They just cleaned her up. She was a little 'cone-headed' at first cause she had gotten stuck in the birth canal as I had stopped pushing halfway. ![]() Day 1. Face is still puffy. So much hair! And so two and a half weeks on, Mummy and baby are doing fine, Alhamdulillah. We wish to thank our gynae, Dr Heng Tung Lan and her assistants at the clinic, Kak Fazi, Joanne and Kimberly, the midwives at East Shore, Kak Sarimah, Kak Sitti and another one I forgot her name. And of course, I thank my dearest hubby, Aiddy, for being so supportive and encouraging in the labour room. I couldn’t have done it without you beside me. Love you and Iman many many!! One more baby?? Err… InsyaAllah, later later lah!! ![]() ![]()
